Forest Preserve Seeks Grant to Return Footbridge to Fabyan
Back in 2014, the Forest Preserve District of Kane County was forced to take down the historic footbridge at Fabyan Forest Preserve due to structural deterioration. In fact, the bridge had been closed since 2012 after a section of the bridge failed.
Flash forward to 2017, and the footbridge appears ready for a comeback.
The Kane County Forest Preserve Commission voted today (Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2017) to apply for Grand Victoria Riverboat Funds for the bridge-replacement project and OK’d engineering for the Fabyan causeway and bridge project. According to the resolution, engineering costs cannot exceed $94,232.
The estimated cost to install the new bridge is $400,000. Forest Preserve District staff now has permission to apply for Kane County Grand Victoria Riverboat Funds that will reimburse the district up to $100,000 if the grant is awarded.
Funds totaling $83,147 are available in the Fox River Trust Fund account, and $191,781 is available in the Construction & Development Fund for this project.
Fabyan Forest Preserve is one of Kane County’s most heavily used preserves. The preserve is 198 acres of land nestled in the heart of Geneva. Countless people visit the preserve to enjoy the many amenities from fishing on the Fox River, biking riding on the Fox River Trail, to visiting the Colonel Fabyan artifacts including the Windmill, Japanese Garden and the Fabyan Villa.
