‘Pickleball’ Sweeping the Nation — And Coming to St. Charles

It is America’s fastest-growing sport, and it’s coming (INSERT DRAMATIC MUSIC HERE) to St. Charles, IL.

Maybe the name has something to do with it, but pickleball just seems to attract fun and friends like few other sports. Now those folks who have come together through their passion for this pickled pastime — and those who want to explore its mysteries — can enjoy a fun-filled night when the St. Charles Park District hosts its first-ever Pickleball Social from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, March 3.

The gym at the Pottawatomie Community Center will be transformed into Pickleball Central, with four courts set up for open play. All skill levels are welcome for this night of fast-paced fun, said Josh Williams, adult programs and special events supervisor.

“We have a great following of dedicated pickleball players,” said Williams. “They are always looking for more times to play and more opportunities to have fun.”

Pickleball is a fast-paced game that can be played as a singles or double competition. The Pickleball Social will be set up to accommodate both regular play or can be transformed into a mini-tournament, if players so desire.

And when players want to take a break from the action, they can adjourn to an adjacent multi-purpose room, where food and drink will be provided.

“So many of our regular pickleball players are friends, and this night gives them a chance to socialize and play at the same time,” said Williams.

The Park District will also give away pickleball-themed apparel and raffle off pickleball-themed prizes throughout the night. (We are not making this up.)

Combining elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong, pickleball is an easy game to learn. There are great places to find the best pickleball paddles so those who are interested in trying out this game, can.

“This is also a good opportunity for people who are interested in seeing how the game is played to come and join in on the fun,” said Williams.

A fun sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong.
Played both indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court and a slightly modified tennis net.
Played with a paddle and a plastic ball with holes.
Played as doubles or singles.
