10:30 PM UPDATE — 2017 Primary Election Results: Irvin, Guzman Advance in Aurora Mayoral Race

The “big event” in the Tuesday, Feb. 28, primary election in Kane County was the race for mayor of Aurora, where the four candidates on the primary ballot were whittled to two for the April 4 consolidated election.
As of 10 p.m., Richard Irvin and Richard Guzman have advanced in the race for Aurora mayor, according to unofficial election reports.
With 73 of 73 precincts reporting in Aurora and 43 of 43 precincts reporting in DuPage County, Irvin finished in first place with 3,502 votes. Guzman was second with 3,131 votes.
The two candidates who will not advance are Linda Chapa LaVia, who finished third with 2,821 votes, and Michael Saville, who finished fourth with 1,566 votes.
DuPage County totals were a deciding factor. In the Kane, Will and Kendall portions of Aurora, Guzman held a slim lead over Chapa LaVia: 2,384 to 2,332, each with about 26 percent of the total. Guzman beat Chapa LaVia 747 to 489 in DuPage County to wrap up the second-place spot.
Also on primary ballots in Kane County were the Aurora Township highway commissioner and trustee positions and the Dundee Township highway commissioner and trustee positions.
Juan Reyna won the Democratic primary race for Aurora Township highway commissioner, with 1,533 votes. Mark Semmler was second with 1,310, Jason D. Owens third with 738 and Kevin Allen Hale fourth with 540.
For Aurora Township trustee, the four Democratic candidates with the top vote totals were Dolores M. Hicks, Juanita T. Wells, Brenda Hernandez and David W. Moore.
In the Republican primary for Dundee Township highway commissioner, Scott M. Sinnett defeated Larry G. Braasch and Michael D. Rogers, according to unofficial totals on the Kane County Clerk’s Office election webpage. The four GOP candidates to advance for Dundee Township trustee were Kenneth J. Schaffer, Susan F. Harney, George E. Johnson and Richard E. Ahrens.
