The next Kane County Recycles Event will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 1, at 540 S. Randall in St. Charles. The following event date is set for the second Saturday in May — May 13, 2017.

Kane County will be recycling electronics, books and paint and offering free, confidential-document shredding.

On April 1, you can recycle electronics such as computers, keyboards, laptops, printers, televisions (any size or age), stereos, cell phones, microwaves, Christmas lights and more.

“We unload for you!” Kane County Recycling Coordinator Jennifer Jarland said.

Most electronic items can be dropped off for free — pretty much everything except for TVs and monitors.

Fees For Recycling TVs and Monitors

The fee to recycle TVs and computer monitors is determined by the size of the screen as measured diagonally. It doesn’t matter whether the screen is a tube or flat screen. The fee is $25 each for screens under 21 inches (measured diagonally) and $35 each for screens 21 inches and more.

The fee may be paid online in advance or onsite with cash or card. Exact change is appreciated. The fee that you pay for screened equipment goes directly to the county’s contracted electronics recycler, eWorks, a non-profit whose main mission is to employ developmentally disabled individuals.

Other Stuff You Can Recycle April 1

Kane County takes books of any age and condition, paperback or hardcover, for reuse and recycling.

Liquid Latex paint and oil paint will be accepted at this event. Paint also has a recycling fee per container, payable by the resident with cash or check. It is $2 per pint, $3.50 per gallon, and $10 per 5-gallon bucket.

Latex paint is non-toxic but difficult to dispose because you have to dry it out before placing it in your landfill trash. However, it can be easily recycled into new products with no drying out necessary!

Oil paint is now accepted at the event, for a per-can cost of $6 per gallon and $25 per 5-gallon bucket. This is for convenience only; please note that you can drop oil paint at the Naperville HHW facility for free. Cash or check only for the paint.

Bring your confidential documents in paper bags or boxes. The kimit is four boxes. No documents from businesses will be accepted. More guidelines can be found on the documents page of the Kane County Recycles website.
