Who’s on the April 4 Ballot? ‘Other’ Local Races … And How to Find More Info!

  • Editor’s Note: This article is part of a series informing Kane County residents “who’s on the ballot” in the variety of contests that will appear on the April 4 consolidated election ballot. The primary sources are the Kane County Clerk’s Office election webpages and the Aurora Election Commission website. Kane County Connects encourages citizens to visit those sites and other media to find out more about the candidates and issues.

When you go to vote on April 4, one of the toughest decisions you’ll have to make involves the contested races in those “other” categories — community college trustee, fire district trustee and regional school district trustee.

How do you know who to vote for or upon what information to base your vote?

That’s a toughy, and the best advice we can offer as a government service is simply to do the hard work yourself. Here’s one way to go about that:

STEP 1: If you live in Kane County but outside the city of Aurora limits, take a look at your personal sample ballot on the Kane County Clerk’s Office website. Here’s a “how to” story to help you do that. (Be sure to read the “how to” because it’s a little tricky.)

STEP 2: Find the contested races in which you’ll have to make a decision. For example, in Elgin Community College 509, voters must choose three from among the five candidates on the ballot.

STEP 3: Do an Internet search for each candidate’s name. That should lead you to the candidate’s election website, Facebook page or, if they filled out a candidate profile, to a local news site, where you can find more information.

Where to Find More Information

Some of the larger news organizations in Kane County have “election central” web pages, where you can find candidate profiles and election-related news articles. The election pages of the three largest news organizations in Kane County are the Kane County Chronicle’s “2017 Election Central,” the Chicago Tribune’s “Election Center” page and the Daily Herald’s “Consolidated Election 2017” page.

Obviously, you can also peruse the websites of the districts themselves to learn more about the geographic footprint and issues of concern. Just as an example, here’s a link to the Elgin Community College 509 web page, where you’ll find a map of the district as well as a list of communities and school districts within its boundaries.
