Who’s on the April 4 Ballot? Park District Races at a Glance

  • Editor’s Note: This article is part of a series informing Kane County residents “who’s on the ballot” in the variety of contests that will appear on the April 4 consolidated election ballot. The primary sources are the Kane County Clerk’s Office election webpages and the Aurora Election Commission website. Kane County Connects encourages citizens to visit those sites and other media to find out more about the candidates and issues.

Have you ever been to a park? Given your child her first push on a public swing set? Watched the June canoe race? Attended a daddy-daughter date night? Slid down a water slide at a public pool? Teed it up at Pottawatomie? Paid a property-tax bill?

If you answered yes to one or more of the above, you’re invested in your local park district. And if you’re a voter, you owe it to yourself and your community to make an informed vote for park commissioner in the April 4 election.

How do you do that effectively? Visit local newspaper websites and check out the candidates’ profiles. Google the candidate’s name, find his or her campaign website and read what he or she has to say. Visit your park district website and read some of the recent minutes.

Park districts in Kane County account for anywhere from 3 percent to 6 percent of your property-tax bill. Certainly not the biggest slice of the pie, but it should be enough money to get your attention.

Park board commissioners are, of course, the policymakers. They determine how your tax dollars are spent, whether for programs or facilities, staff or maintenance. They hire the district administrator, oversee operations and evaluate the needs and resources of the community to make decisions.

According to the Kane County Clerk’s Office website, there are four contested park-commissioner races on ballots in Kane County:

  • Five candidates are vying for four seats on the St. Charles Park Board.
  • Four candidates are competing for two seats on the Bartlett Park Board.
  • Four candidates are on the ballot for two open seats in Ward 2 of the Fox Valley Park District Board.
  • Four candidates have lined up for two open seats in Ward 3 of the Fox Valley Park District Board.

Scroll down for a full list of candidates in each race.

As you scroll, you’ll notice that some districts have more open seats than candidates. Voters have an option to write in a candidate when they go to the polls. However, a write-in vote will not be counted for any candidate who has failed to file an “Intent to be a Write-in Candidate” as prescribed by law.

For more information on the requirements for a write-in candidate, see this page on the Kane County Clerk’s Office election website.
