Dude! You Can Pick the Best Doughnut in Aurora!
Wayne’s World! Wayne’s World! Doughnut Time! Excellent!
A blind taste-test of doughnuts, organized by the Aurora Historical Society, will be part of the festivities surrounding the 25th anniversary of the movie Wayne’s World.
The taste-off will be held on April 7, 2017, during First Fridays, the downtown art walkabout, beginning at 6 p.m. at the David L. Pierce Art and History Center, 20 E. Downer, 60505. The award will be presented at approximately 8:15 p.m.
For a donation of $3, participants will receive tastes of six doughnuts plus a nonalcoholic beverage of their choice, and will vote for one favorite. The winning bakery will be presented the “Andy Aurora Top Donut” trophy plate and will be invited to sell baked goods at the Food Truck First Fridays, to be held this year on May 5 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in downtown Aurora.
In addition to the donut tasting, visitors may sample free tastings of specialty teas and coffees from David’s Tea at the Chicago Premium Outlets and Two Brothers Coffee Roasters, both in Aurora.
“The doughnut competition is the Aurora Historical Society’s contribution to the Wayne’s World anniversary,” said Aurora Historical Society president Mary Clark Ormond. “We didn’t have any actual history to work with since the movie was not filmed here, but Stan Mikita’s Donut Shop is something many people remember from the movie.”
The award is named for the 1964 cartoon character which became the city’s mid-century brand image. His image is a popular seller in the society’s Museum Store. Ormond doesn’t foresee the award becoming an annual thing but would not discount the possibility that other Andy Aurora awards might be given for other reasons in the future.
