2ND UPDATE: 71 MPH Winds Reported Early Thursday, May 18

Gusts in Plainfield reach 71 mph last night, and communities throughout Kane County sustained some damage as a storm ripped through the area Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

Many early-morning reports aren’t in as of 8:10 a.m., but the National Weather Service Chicago trained spotters have listed some of the night’s activities on the NWS Local Storm Report.

A location off Plainfield Road in Kendall County reported the 71 mph winds at 12:05 a.m.

Gusts of 66 mph were reported at DuPage Airport at 11:17 p.m.

There were multiple reports of large trees down throughout Kane County. A large tree was reported down at around 11 p.m. in the back yard of a home in North Aurora. Branches of 4 inches to 6 inches in diameter were blocking streets in DeKalb. There were many reports of large hail and damaged cars. About 10 power polls were snapped on Cedar Road in Lee County, according the NWS reports.

We’ll update this report as more information becomes available from the NWS Chicago.

Kane County Executive Director of Building Management Don Biggs said there was no major damage or trees down on Kane County building sites but power was out overnight at the Kane County Government Center in Geneva.

FROM THE CITY OF GENEVA

Overnight Storms Knock Down Branches & Trees, City Responding To Pockets Of Reported Power Outages

The storms overnight caused numerous tree branches to fall across Geneva and in some cases larger sections of trees.

A tree was found lying on overhead lines in a backyard in the 1300 block of Dunstan Road that knocked out power to about 20 customers.

As people woke up this morning, more power outages were reported to the City, including a tree that snapped at the corner of Second and Ford streets. The tree fell onto power lines and was resting on a metal street sign. The area was deemed a safety hazard, and Geneva Police monitored the area until Public Works crews could respond.

The City’s Public Works Street Division has been out removing fallen trees and tree limbs. A contractor was called to help remove the large sections of trees on both Dunstan Road and Second Street. After the trees have been removed, the Electric Division can begin repair work to the impacted areas.

Customers near Second & Ford should have their power restored shortly. The estimated power restoration time for Dunstan is late morning.

There have also been other scattered outages reported to the City, and Public Works crews are addressing those issues too.

As a reminder, customers wanting to report power outages during normal business hours can call the City’s Electric Division at 630-232-1503. After-hours and weekend incidents should be reported to the Geneva Police Department’s non-emergency number at 630-232-4736.
