Armed Inmate Killed After Taking Hostages at Delnor Hospital
The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force has been requested by the Kane County sheriff to investigate the use of force during an Officer Involved Shooting that occurred Saturday (May 13, 2017) at Delnor Hospital, in Geneva.
On that day, Kane County SWAT responded to a barricade hostage situation at Delnor Hospital in which Tywon Salters, 21, of Chicago, held a nurse at gunpoint in a hospital room. Negotiations between Kane County SWAT and Salters deteriorated and SWAT entered the hospital room to rescue the hostage victim.
During entry, a Kane County SWAT member fired a weapon, fatally striking Salters. Salters was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The preliminary investigation indicated Salters took a weapon from a corrections officer, then held two nurses hostage during the incident. The weapon was recovered at the scene.
An autopsy will be scheduled by the Kane County coroner.
This case remains an open and ongoing investigation. No further information is being released at this time.
The public is reminded that all persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
