Butterball Plant in Montgomery to Close in July

Montgomery village officials said Thursday that they were very disappointed to learn of plans to close the Butterball plant at 2125 Rochester Drive in July
About 600 jobs are expected to be lost due to the plant closing, according to the village and news reports. Most of the plant’s products will be discontinued.

Butterball had purchased the former Gusto Packing in 2013 and made considerable improvements and expansions to the plant, using in part Revolving Funds from the village of Montgomery, Montgomery Village President Matt Brolley said in a news release.
“Gusto Packing was a long-time, family owned business and when Butterball purchased the plant and made improvements, we anticipated that they would be operating their business here for many years to come,” he said. “The employees have been very loyal to this facility for a long time, and the sudden closure comes as a shock to them and to us.”
Brolley asaid the village will make sure the economic development loan made to Butterball is repaid before the facility closes.
“The village will do everything it can for the employees affected by this and are investigating specific ways to provide assistance and support,” he said.
Butterball’s action follows last month’s announcement by Caterpillar that it will close its Montgomery manufacturing plant in 2018, resulting in a loss of 800 jobs.
According to the Associated Press, Butterball Chief Operating Officer Jay Jandrain cited the “lack of vertical integration in the pork complex” for the Gusto plant’s closing.
Executives said they intend to find work for Gusto employees willing to relocate. Butterball has plants in Missouri, Arkansas and North Carolina.
