29-Year-Old Carpentersville Man Flees Restaurant, Jumps in River and Drowns
Algonquin police are investigating the downing death of a 29-year-old Carpentersville man who apparently jumped into the Fox River on Thursday after not paying his tab at an Algonquin restaurant.
According to a report from the Algonquin Police Department, the body of Ernest Prentic was found Friday (June 2, 2017). A report from the Kane County Coroner’s Office said the body was found floating in the Fox River in Carpentersville.
The Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy on Monday and determined the preliminary cause of death as drowning. Toxicology samples have been sent to a forensic laboratory for analysis.
Algonquin police officers had responded at around 9:20 a.m. Thursday, June 1, to a report of a theft occurring at Nero’s Restaurant, 300 Eastgate Court.
Police said a male subject fled from the restaurant after not paying his tab and was seen running toward the Fox River. Witnesses confirmed that the subject had jumped into the river, police said.
The Algonquin/Lake in the Hills Fire Department was contacted and shortly thereafter conducted a water rescue/search of the river, the police report said. Multiple surrounding fire departments responded to the scene, but did not find the man at that time.
The matter is still being investigated by the Algonquin Police Department.
