Concert For a Cause in Elgin Raises Funds For Syrian Refugees
A church in Elgin is hosting a concert for a cause to raise money for Syrian refugee families.
Bassel & The Supernaturals, a multi-piece R&B band that includes horns, keys, bass, guitar and drums, headline the concert scheduled for 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at the First United Methodist Church, 216 E. Highland Ave. Elgin, IL
Bassel & The Supernaturals was featured at the 2016 and 2017 South by Southwest Festival in Austin, TX, and has a new release called Elements. You can watch the group’s video here.
“Based in Chicago, Syrian American soul singer Bassel Almadani brings a humanitarian message through mellow grooves of sound as he translates his grief into soul, funk, and activism,” the FUMC Elgin news release said. “Bassel’s heartfelt music connects neighbors, while teaching about the plight of Syrian refugees.”
Elements is dedicated to tragedies in Almadani’s life, including the murder of his cousin, the destruction of his home and the sudden death of the band’s bassist. Bassel & The Supernaturals were on the road giving concerts at universities and churches in an effort to raise awareness about what is happening in Syria when Al-madani learned of his cousin’s murder.
By combining his concerts with informal question and answer sessions, where no question is “out of bounds,” Almadani discovered he could help those in the United States connect with people profoundly affected by war half a world away.
