38th Avenue Road Closed between Illinois and Ohio Avenues in St. Charles

The city of St. Charles is closing 38th Avenue between Illinois Avenue and Ohio Avenue from 6 p.m. today (Thursday, Aug. 17, 2017) through noon Monday, Aug. 21.

The closure allows night and weekend work needed to complete roadway paving. During this time, motorists can use alternate routes, such as Kautz Road, to avoid the construction activity.

The work is part of the 38th Avenue Roadway Rehabilitation Project. The city’s contractors already have completed the utility, sidewalk and curb repairs. The final phases of the project include roadway work, punch list items and restoration.

The proposed roadway work uses a minimally disruptive pavement rehabilitation known as Full-Depth Reclamation. The FDR process allows the contractor to remove only a portion of the existing pavement, re-using the stone base with strengthening additives prior to re-surfacing the roadway with a new asphalt surface course. This process is not only more economical than completely reconstructing the street, but also is less disruptive to businesses and traffic.

“The city of St. Charles Public Works Department maintains over 135 miles of roadways each year through a variety of maintenance and reconstruction strategies,” said Karen Young, assistant director of Public Works. “This project is located in the city’s east side industrial park. Many of the businesses there operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and have heavy truck traffic, making construction work challenging.

“The city appreciates the cooperation and collaboration with the local businesses during the planning phase and construction process. The partnerships with these businesses created opportunities to shorten the length of the project and minimize roadway closures.”
