AURORA MAN FACING AT LEAST 10 YEARS IN PRISON FOR MURDER ATTEMPT WITH KNIFE

An Aurora man faces a prison sentence of at least 10 years after being convicted for trying to slash a man to death with a knife.

A Kane County jury on Aug. 17, 2017, convicted 35-year-old Shaun J. Ramirez of attempted murder, Class X felony; and armed violence, Class X felony.

The jurors deliberated for about 21⁄2 hours before they reached the verdict.

Kane County Assistant State’s Attorneys Lori Anderson and Matthew Rodgers presented evidence that at about 7 p.m. Dec. 21, 2016, the victim and Ramirez were talking outside Ramirez’s home in the 1300 block of North Glen Circle. Ramirez, who was intoxicated, punched the victim in the mouth. As the victim began to walk away, Ramirez slashed the victim on the left side of his body with a knife.

The victim wrestled Ramirez to the ground and they exchanged punches. The victim stood, told Ramirez the fight was over, walked to a friend’s car got in a closed the door. Ramirez ran to the car, reached through the open passenger-side window and began to stab the victim in the face and throat. Ramirez then grabbed the victim’s right arm and began to saw at it, cutting a large chunk from the bone and leaving a large hole in the arm. The driver finally left the scene and drove the victim to the hospital, where he was treated for life-threatening injuries.

The victim, who told police he believed Ramirez was trying to kill him, suffered significant injuries to his right arm, including detached tendons. He continues to recover but the attack most likely caused permanent damage.

Ramirez was on parole at the time of the attack for a 2014 Kane County conviction for aggravated battery. Ramirez has multiple prior convictions for violent offenses and has served at least three prior prison terms.

Ramirez remains in custody at the Kane County jail, where he has been held since his arrest in lieu of $750,000 bail. Bond was revoked upon conviction.

Associate Judge David R. Kliment set Ramirez’s next court appearance for 1:30 p.m. Oct. 26, 2017, for motions and sentencing. Ramirez faces a sentence of between 10 and 30 years’ imprisonment in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

“To describe this attack as ‘violent’ seems inadequate. It was vicious, chilling and almost deadly. By all accounts this victim is fortunate to have survived. Mr. Ramirez is dangerous and belongs back in prison,” Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said.

McHENRY MAN GUILTY OF BATTERING 84-YEAR-OLD WOMAN AT ELGIN CASINO

A Kane County jury has convicted a McHenry man of battering an elderly person.

Forty-nine-year-old Steven K. Henshall was convicted Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2017, of two counts of aggravated battery, Class 3 felony, and aggravated domestic battery, Class 4 felony.

Kane County Assistant State’s Attorneys Bianca Camargo and Vincent Coyle presented evidence that at about 9:30 p.m. April 13, 2017, Henshall was at the Grand Victoria Casino in Elgin with the 84-year-old victim, whom he knew. When the victim told Henshall that she had misplaced an item, Henshall became angry and hit the victim with her wallet. He then grabbed her by the arm and they went into a restaurant, where he shoved her into a table and continued to pin her against the table. Two witnesses called authorities to report the abuse.

Associate Judge David R. Kliment set Henshall’s next court appearance for 1:30 p.m. Sept. 22, 2017, in Courtroom 217 at the Kane County Judicial Center for motions and sentencing. Henshall faces a sentence of probation or between 2 and 10 years’ imprisonment in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Henshall remains in custody at the Kane County jail, where he has been held since his arrest in lieu of $40,000 bail. Bond was revoked upon conviction.
