Tri-Cities Fire Officials Investigate Third Garage Fire in 2 Weeks
A detached garage was severely damaged by fire Thursday (Aug. 10, 2017) at 1022 Geneva Drive on Geneva’s east side, the third garage fire in the area in less than two weeks.
The Geneva Fire Department responded to the Geneva Drive incident at about 6:16 p.m. Thursday for an initial report of an alley garage on fire.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the two-car garage fully involved, and the siding to the garage directly to the east starting to melt, as well. Quick deployment of hose lines by firefighters kept the fire from extending to additional structures, and no houses were involved in the blaze, fire officials said.
No one was injured from the fire.
There were no cars parked in the garage. However, the structure sustained severe damage, and the contents inside have been deemed a total loss. The neighboring garage also suffered minor exterior heat damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and damage estimates are being compiled.
The St. Charles Fire Department provided assistance to Geneva at the scene.
Other Area Fires
Thirteen days earlier, St. Charles firefighters battled a garage fire blaze at 409 McKinley St., about four miles from the Geneva garage fire. In that July 29 blaze, firefighters discovered the body of a man later identified as Frank Nezrick, Jr., 80, who was the resident of the home. Fire loss in the McKinley Street fire was estimated at $100,000.
On Aug. 1, three days after the McKinley Street fire, St. Charles and 18 other area fire departments responded to a box-alarm garage fire at 314 Indiana St., about a mile north of the Saturday fire and also about four miles from the Geneva fire. The Indiana Street fire spread to three vehicles, two houses, a neighbor’s garage, causing about $385,000 to the structures, vehicles and contents, according to a St. Charles Fire Department news release.
Back in June, the Kane County Coroner’s Office identified the person whose body was found shot and badly burned following a “suspicious” house fire near East Dundee.
