The man whose body was found Saturday (July 29) by St. Charles firefighters battling a garage fire has been identified as Frank Nezrick, Jr., 80, who was the resident of the home at 409 McKinley St.

The Kane County Coroner’s Office issued a news release today (Friday, Aug. 4, 2017) that positively identified Nezrick but said the preliminary cause of death is pending the completion of the “medicolegal death investigation.”

Toxicology samples are being tested at the forensic lab, the news release said.

St. Charles firefighters discovered Nezrick’s body Saturday when they extinguished a garage fire at his home on McKinley Street.

According to a news release from St. Charles Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet, the Fire Department was dispatched at around 7:17 p.m. Saturday, July 29, to a reported garage fire, phoned in by multiple callers to 911, at 1211 South Fourth St.

Units were on the scene by 7:20 p.m., and found a fully involved detached garage on fire with the corrected address being 409 McKinley St.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in about 20 minutes but remained on the scene for several hours, completing the fire investigation.

While conducting fire-extinguishing operations, firefighters “located an obviously deceased male victim,” reports said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the St. Charles Police Department is conducting a death investigation.

There were no injuries to firefighters. Fire loss is estimated at $100,000 to the structure and contents.

The St. Charles Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Geneva, Batavia, Elburn and South Elgin fire departments.

The garage fire was the first of two fires in that area of St. Charles within a three-day period. The second fire, at 314 Indiana St., took place on July 31, starting with a garage fire and spreading to three vehicles, two houses and a neighbor’s garage. The box-alarm fire required the assistance of 19 area fire departments.
