Bliss Road bridge replacement work will require several 10- to 15-minute traffic stoppages Friday, Sept. 8 — so plan accordingly if you’re heading in that direction.

As has been the case for awhile now, traffic will only be able to travel southwest from May Road to Capitol Drive through the project area, but on Friday, traffic will be continuously held several times for 10 to 15 minutes at a time to facilitate the safe delivery and placement of large bridge beams from trucks.

As depicted on the map above, the northeast-bound detour will continue to use Illinois Route 47 north to Main Street Road east. Access to Ke-De-Ka Road will continue to be for local traffic only. During work on the east side of Bliss Road, temporary access to the Midwest Greyhound Rescue will be provided along Bliss Road from Capitol Drive.

Long traffic delays may develop between the hours of 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. to safely unload the bridge beams.

Motorists are advised to avoid traveling through the project area on Sept. 8, 2017, or expect longer-than-normal delays. Changeable message boards will alert motorists of the new date of the expected traffic delays if weather causes a delay.

Motorists need to be prepared to reduce their speed, exercise caution, and be extra alert. Watch for construction workers, construction vehicles entering or leaving the site, and obey flaggers and other traffic control devices within the work zone.

KDOT reminds drivers that it is illegal to talk on a cell phone while driving through a highway construction work zone.
