2ND UPDATE: Driver Killed, 3-Year-Old Seriously Injured in Sugar Grove Crash
A 36-year-old Bartlett driver was killed and a 3-year-old passenger was severely injured Saturday at an intersection in unincorporated Sugar Grove Township.
The Kane County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the fatal crash that took place at around 3:25 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 9, 2017) at the intersection of Harter Road and Scott Road.
The initial investigation indicates that a 2003 Acura driven by Yonathan M. Contreras Chapa of Bartlett was traveling west on Scott Road and failed to stop for the stop sign at the intersection of Harter Road. When the Acura entered the intersection, it collided with a 2000 Chevy Venture traveling north on Harter Road and driven by Javier Bibiano of Aurora. Traffic on Harter Road does not have a stop sign.
Contreras-Chapa was pronounced deceased at the scene. His front-seat passenger, 29-year-old Gloria Tovar-Quintero of Bartlett, was transported to Mercy Center Hospital with apparent non-life-threatening injuries.
Tovar-Quintero’s 3-year-old daughter, who had been in a child seat in the back seat, was taken to Mercy Center Hospital in Aurora and then flown to Lutheran General Hospital.
Bibiano and a passenger of the Chevy, 60-year-old Elda DeLaRosa-Acevedo of Aurora, were transported to Delnor Hospital with apparent non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash remains under investigation. No citations have been issued, and deputies have not determined if drugs or alcohol played a role in this crash.
An autopsy was conducted at the Kane County Coroner’s Office on Sept. 11, 2017. The preliminary cause of Contreras-Chapa’s death is reported as “Multiple Injuries due to an Automobile Collision.” Toxicology samples were sent to a forensic laboratory for analysis.
