FVPD September Programs: Take Guided Tours, Hike a Preserve, Help Plant Oak Trees And More!
September is a great month to get yourself, your children, your family and friends outside.
And there’s no better way to do that than with the Forest Preserve District of Kane County. Here’s a peek at some of the programs this month and beyond.
Seniors Invited on Guided Forest Preserve Walks, This Fall
Seniors, come along on a leisurely guided walk through natural areas in the Kane County forest preserves.
Each month, Forest Preserve District naturalists lead a hike as part of our “Senior Stroll” program series. Along the walk, attendees learn about the natural and cultural history of the area. “Senior Stroll” programs last about an hour, with social time and refreshments following the walk. These nature programs are free. Registration is not required.
The October “Senior Stroll” moves to Dick Young Forest Preserve, located at 39W115 Main St., Batavia. This program is on Thursday, Oct. 5, from 10 a.m. to noon.
The November “Senior Stroll” program will take place at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, located at 37W700 Dean St., St. Charles. This program is on Thursday, Nov. 2, from 10 a.m. to noon.
Save the date for our year-end gathering on Thursday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Barbara Belding Lodge at Brewster Creek, located at 6N921 Route 25, St. Charles. Bring a store-bought holiday dish to pass. We’ll share food, fellowship and festivities at this annual Senior Stroll tradition.

Volunteer on National Public Lands Day
Help plant hundreds of oak trees in under three hours!
The Forest Preserve District of Kane County is calling for volunteers of all ages to help plant trees at Dick Young Forest Preserve as part of National Public Lands Day. This tree-planting event is one of many that will take place across the country on Sept. 30. National Public Lands Day is America’s largest single-day volunteer event dedicated to improving public lands.
Tree planting begins at 10 a.m. sharp, and will last until all oaks are planted (or 1 p.m. — whichever comes first). Please bring work gloves if you prefer. Holes are pre-dug. We’ll need volunteers to plant the trees, tamp down dirt, water and mulch. It’s easy! We’ll also have seed collection, and brush-clearing groups. This is a great event for families, scouts, groups or individuals.
Be a part of planting trees that will last for hundreds of years, and that future generations will enjoy.
Groups of less than 10 do not need to register in advance. Groups of 10 or more, please contact our Volunteer coordinator at 630-762-2741 or e-mail volunteer@kaneforest.com to RSVP.
Dick Young Forest Preserve is located at 39W115 Main St., Batavia. Please use the Main Street entrance.
