‘How to Run for Office — A Woman’s Focus’ Oct. 14 in Elgin

The YWCA Elgin, in partnership with the League of Women Voters of the Elgin Area, will present a non-partisan one-day workshop on “How to Run for Office ~ A Woman’s Focus”.

According to a Washington Post poll published Feb. 1, 2017, 25 percent of respondents nationwide plan on becoming more involved in political causes in the next year. Much of this interest is in response to the 2016 presidential election.

“Running for local office or helping manage a campaign is an opportunity to become involved and make a difference in your community,” organizers said in a recent news release. “If you have ever considered running for office, a small investment of your time now can empower you with the knowledge needed to make the leap into politics.”

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017, at the YWCA Elgin.

Participants will get a chance to learn about what it takes to run for local office. The session begins with rating yourself as potential candidate, then provides information on what you need to know about circulating nomination petitions, organizing a campaign, messaging, political ethics and finding informational resources.

This workshop is non-partisan and open to all. Many of our previous year’s attendees have won their local elections.

The cost of this workshop is $30 and includes a box lunch. Reservations must be made by Oct. 3, 2017. To register, please visit www.ywcaelgin.org or call the YWCA Elgin at 847-742-7930.
