As are many other Americans, the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center students took time and effort to help the victims of the recent natural disasters that have touched so many lives.

Organized by the Kane County ROE and JJC School Program, the facility held a Day of Caring event Wednesday, Sept. 13, in which students prepared tie fleece blankets for hurricane victims.

The blankets will be shipped to the Linus Connection in Central Texas, a 501(c)(3) organization that distributes blankets to children evacuees of Hurricane Harvey. Volunteers helped prepare the tie blankets for the activity by pre-cutting them.

Students were given the opportunity to write short messages of encouragement to include with the blanket they prepared. Adult mentors such as the JJC School teachers (Zach Steffes, Rachel Kurkowski, Jimmy Pawola, Murphy Mahalik, Rich Grenda and Principal Ivars Spalis), Shirley LeClere of the Kane County ROE, and JJC youth counselors were each paired with a student to guide them through the process and stress the importance of what the residents were doing

JJC School teachers taught a lesson on the importance of helping those in need and gave background on how agencies such as the Red Cross help people in such disasters.
