Who’s Up For Election in The 2018 Primary?

Believe it or not, there’s an election gearing up.

In fact, petition packets are available right now for local offices in the March 20 primary. The packets are available online on the Kane County Clerk’s Office website.

The first day for candidates to start circulating petitions started Sept. 5. The first day of the filing period is Nov. 27, and the candidate filing deadline is Dec. 4, 2017.

What elected positions are part of the primary?

On the federal level, all of Illinois’ 18 seats in the United States House of Representatives will be up for election in 2018.

Statewide, probably the biggest hoopla will be regarding the race for Illinois governor and lieutenant governor. The other elected positions in state government — attorney general, secretary of state, comptroller and treasure — will be on the ballot, as well.

Elections for the office of Illinois House of Representatives and Illinois State Senate will take place in 2018. All 118 House seats are up for election in 2018 and a total of 39 seats out of the chamber’s 59 seats are up for election in 2018.

There will be other races on the 2018 ballot, including some judicial officers, sanitary district officers and political party positions.

At the county level, it’s the county clerk, sheriff, treasurer, regional superintendent of schools, the odd-numbered County Board seats and precinct committeemen. A full list is below, along with links to information on the required number of signatures, are below.

Whether these positions are contested in the March primary or the November general election is, of course, to be determined. According to the Kane County Clerk’s Office, the candidate shortage in Illinois is getting worse. For the 1,500 seats filled in the November election, voters had no say two-thirds of the time because most candidates ran unopposed.
