• Editor’s Note: This is the first of a series of articles on fall color in and around Kane County.

We’re not quite there yet when it comes to peak fall color here in beautiful Kane County, IL.

But if you’re planning a trip “Up North,” it’s getting close. This weekend and next should be the creme de la creme, colorwise.

At least, that’s what you can read right off one of the best fall-color websites I’ve ever seen: the Travel Wisconsin Fall Color Report.

I love this interactive map and wish we had something like it in Illinois. It offers up-to-the-minute reports on everything from percentage of color to estimated peak times to photo galleries that show you exactly what it looks like.

Seriously, I’m not trying to promote Wisconsin tourism, and goodness knows there are some spectacular places to see fall color here in Kane County and throughout the beautiful state of Illinois, but I know a lot of Kane County folks who are interested in fall color in Wisconsin and make day trips or weekend trips to see it — and this is a great way to stay informed.

Bottom line: The best fall color in Wisconsin is likely the first week of October — depending on how far north you want to go.

If you’re just going to Lake Geneva, for example, the color is estimated at 15 percent right now. The peak is the second week of October.

If you’re going up to Boulder Junction, on the other hand, it’s at 50 percent and you’re looking at a peak during the first week of October.

Some areas in Wisconsin are posted at 75 percent color today (Thursday, Sept. 28, 2017), so strike while the iron is hot.
