The Kane County Sheriff’s Office says two separate reports of shots fired in the Aurora area might be linked to a fatal crash Monday involving a semi, a Jaguar and a GMC Envoy on Orchard Road at the north intersection of Interstate 88.

According to a news release from Kane County Sheriff’s Office Administrative Director Pat Gengler, deputies responded at around 11:47 a.m. Monday (Oct. 16, 2017) to a report of a traffic crash with injuries.

The initial investigation indicates that a semi-tractor trailer driven by Semi-Sadam Elbu, 27, of Burbank was exiting eastbound I-88 and turning south onto Orchard Road, and two vehicles — a Jaguar driven by Serafin Castellanos, 38, of Aurora and a GMC Envoy driven by Christopher Shaw, 23, of North Aurora — were traveling north on Orchard Road, apparently at high rates of speed, when the accident took place.

As the semi was making the turn in the intersection, both vehicles struck the trailer portion of the semi. Castellanos, who was the sole occupant of the Jaguar, was transported to an Aurora-area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Shaw was pronounced dead at the scene.

The front-seat passenger of the Envoy, Devonte Bouchee, 24, of Aurora, and the rear-seat passenger, Devin Dobbs, 23, of Aurora were flown from the scene to a Chicago-area hospital, officials said, both of whom sustained potential life-threatening injuries. At 5:50 p.m., sheriff’s detectives were notified that Bouchee had died.

Elbu, the driver of the semi, was transported from the scene with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office and Aurora Police Department are investigating two separate reports of shots fired in the Aurora area prior to the crash that officials say might be related to the fatal crash.

“Both reports involved vehicles chasing each other and shots being exchanged,” Gengler said. “(Investigators) have not ruled out that the shootings and crash are the result of gang violence.”

First, sheriff’s deputies responded at 11:04 a.m. to a report of shots fired on Konen Avenue near Arlene Street in unincorporated Kane County.

Then, at around 11:45 a.m., Aurora police responded to a report of shots fired on Nantucket and Durham near Indian Trail. According to Aurora police, two homes — one in the 1200 block of Morton Avenue, and one in the 800 block of Old Indian Trail — sustained gunfire damage, but there were no injuries.

The investigation is ongoing, and officials are seeking the pubilc’s help.

Orchard Road was closed was closed during the investigation and did not re-open until 5:30 p.m.

No tickets have been issued and no arrests have been made in relation to any of Monday’s events.
