Aurora Police: 2 Pit Bulls Euthanized After Mauling 10-Year-Old

The second of two pit bulls that mauled a 10-year-old boy Friday was impounded at around 9:30 a.m. today (Monday, Oct. 16, 2017), Aurora police said, and both dogs were euthanized today at Aurora Animal Care and Control.

The two pit bulls attacked and seriously wounded a 10-year old-boy around 10:50 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13, in the 1000 block of Jackson Street as the boy was walking to school.

A 31-year-old Aurora woman, who saw the boy being attacked, drove up to the scene and opened her vehicle door to help him. The dogs fled when she approached, and the woman called 9-1-1.

The boy received initial treatment at an Aurora hospital, then was transferred to a suburban hospital.

“His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening,” APD spokesperson and city of Aurora Media Relations Manager Dan Ferrelli said in the initial post. This afternoon, Ferrelli added that the boy “continues to undergo treatment at a suburban Chicago hospital.”

One dog was captured in the 800 block of Watson and impounded shortly after the attack. The second dog — white with brown patches and named “Cash” — was at large since Friday but was seen and photographed in Phillips Park, located in the 1000 block of Ray Moses Drive, over the weekend.

The owner, a 20-year-old man who lives in the 1100 block of Hinman Street in unincorporated Aurora, called Animal Care and Control today, saying he located the missing dog. He then brought it in and surrendered it at the Aurora Animal Care facility.

Both pit bulls were euthanized at Aurora Animal Care and Control, according to an updated Facebook post around 2:15 p.m. today.

The owner faces fines totaling $3,500. He was cited for letting both dogs run at large and the attack on the boy. He was also cited for one of the dogs being overdue for its rabies shot.

Kane County Animal Control is now testing both animals for rabies, Ferrelli said.
