Fortune Magazine Names FONA a Best Workplace in the Nation

FONA International, family-owned creator and manufacturer of complete flavor solutions, was named again one of the country’s best workplaces by Fortune magazine and consulting firm Great Place to Work. In fact, FONA was ranked No. 43 out of the top 100 medium-sized businesses in the country, and was the top manufacturing company on the list.

This is the second consecutive year that FONA has been named to the list. The national ranking comes just weeks after Fortune magazine named FONA the No. 44 best Workplace for Women (of any size), and just months after FONA was named No. 1 medium-sized workplace in Chicagoland.

“The Best Small & Medium workplaces are laying the groundwork for future success by building trust, cooperation and leadership credibility. All of these enhance business performance and create a positive environment for doing business,” said Michael Bush, CEO of Great Place to Work.

FONA won based on employees’ anonymous responses to an extensive survey about their levels of trust, pride and camaraderie at work. FONA was above benchmark for the categories of leadership credibility, pride and respect. The independent review shows that 99 percent of FONA employees say the company’s pride is excellent, and 98 percent rate the atmosphere, challenges, and communication at FONA as “great.”

“Being named one of the top workplaces in the country is an incredible honor,” said FONA President Amy McDonald. “At FONA, we strive for a growth-focused culture. Fostering growth for our amazing people is the way we ensure growth for the business and for our partners. I’m proud to work for FONA, where employees are valued as the #1 asset. Our team never ceases to amaze me, when it comes to their engagement and motivation to help our customers succeed.”

Great Place to Work reviewed the survey results of more than 74,000 employees from hundreds of companies in the ranking process. Outstanding small and mid-sized employers — as identified by their employees — are substantially more likely to report work experiences linked to retention, innovation and good customer service, according to research by Great Place to Work. The winning organizations also are more likely than their peers to maintain a healthy organizational culture as they grow larger and more complex.

About The Award

Published together with Fortune, the Best Small & Medium Workplaces rankings based on anonymous feedback from more than 74,000 employees working at Great Place to Work-Certified organizations. Employees completed a Trust Index™ survey with more than 50 questions assessing pride, camaraderie, executive effectiveness, innovation, benefits, professional development and other elements of a great workplace. Scores also considered organizations’ performance relative to their size and industry, as well as their ability to provide a great workplace for all employees, regardless of who they are or what they do. Survey results from eligible companies had a 6 percent margin of error, at most, with a 95 percent confidence level. Organizations with 10 to 99 employees were considered for the small workplaces list and those with 100-999 employees were considered for the medium list.
