Geneva Police Offer Free Gun Locks To Promote Firearm Safety

In the wake of the Las Vegas mass shootings and the talk about gun acquisition and safety these days, it’s interesting to note one Kane County community’s efforts to help residents prevent potential tragedies.

The city is inviting firearm owners to pick up a free gun lock now being offered by the Geneva Police Department.

The Police Department’s Crime Prevention Team has received the gun locks courtesy of Project Child Safe, a program of the National Shooting Sports Foundation that promotes firearm safety and education.

“Geneva police strongly encourage all residents who possess firearms to keep their weapons safely stored at all times in order to prevent accidental injuries or death,” officials said in announcing the program. “Firearm safety is especially important for households with children, who are often curious about guns and do not understand the potential risk involved in handling a weapon.”

The free gun locks are available to city of Geneva residents at the Geneva Police Department, 20 Police Plaza, while supplies last. Personal information will not be requested nor recorded by police.

The goal of the program is to encourage Geneva residents to keep their firearms secure.
