Higgins Road (Route 72) in Gilberts Closes 1 Week For RR Crossing Repairs
The Illinois Department of Transportation announced Friday that Higgins Road (Illinois 72) will be fully closed at the Union Pacific railroad company crossing, east of Interstate 90 in Gilberts, beginning Tuesday, Oct. 10, weather permitting. The closure is necessary to repair the badly deteriorated at-grade railroad crossing.
A posted detour will direct eastbound Higgins Road traffic to travel southeast on Big Timber Road (County Highway 21) and north on Tyrell Road (County Highway 59) to meet back with Higgins Road. Westbound Higgins Road traffic will take the reverse route.
The crossing repairs are expected to be completed on Tuesday, Oct. 17, weather permitting.
Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to and obey signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
