Kane County Recycles’ last event of 2017 takes place from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 11, at the Branch Court Office, 540 S. Randall in St. Charles, and includes electronics, books and paint recycling along with free confidential document shredding.

“We unload for you!” Kane County Recycling Coordinator Jennifer Jarland said.

The next event will be on Saturday, Jan. 13, and will be for electronics and books only.

Electronics

Recycle computers, keyboards, laptops, printers, televisions and computer monitors, stereos, cell phones, microwaves, Christmas lights, and more.

The county works with longtime partner eWorks Recycling Services for the collection and processing of all electronics. The fee for TV and monitor recycling is paid directly with cash or card to eWorks, a non-profit whose main mission is to employ people with developmental disabilities.

The fees are:

• $25 for each screen under 21 inches, measured diagonally.
• $35 for screens 21 inches or more, measured diagonally.

Kane County does not accept large household appliances like washers and refrigerators.

Books

Kane County takes books of any age and condition for reuse or recycling. The county works with a local non-profit company called Pacesetter Books that recovers as many books as possible for reuse, and with RockTenn, paper manufacturers who recycle the remainder of books into new paper products at their plant in Aurora.

Pacesetter collects about 80,000 pounds of books each year through this event, and they have been participating in the event since 2004!

Paint

Kane County accepts liquid latex and oil paint at this event, for the purpose of reuse and recycling.

Latex paint is non-toxic but difficult to dispose of normally because you have to dry it out before placing it in your landfill trash. However, it can be easily recycled into new products with no drying out necessary!

“This is the most environmentally sustainable way to get rid of that old paint,” Jarland said.

The county’s service provider, Paint Disposal Services, will now also accept oil paint for a per-can fee. Please note that you can take oil-based paint to the Naperville Household Waste Facility for free. Naperville does not accept latex paint, only oil-based paints and stains.

Liquid latex and oil paint have a recycling fee per container, payable by the resident with cash or check.

• The fee for latex paint is $2 per quart can, $3.50 per gallon can, and $10 per 5-gallon bucket.
• The fee for oil paint is $6 per gallon can, $9 per 2-gallon can, and $25 per 5-gallon bucket.
• All else is free to drop off.

About Paint Disposal Services

Paint Disposal Services, located in Joliet, collects unused and/or leftover paint from participating Ace and True Value hardware stores, homeowners, commercial businesses, municipalities, contractors, property management companies and from recycling collection events like Kane County’s.

 

Confidential Document Shredding

Kane County will have document shredding service trucks on site on Saturday.

This service is for residential use only. No business shredding will be allowed.

What can you shred? Perhaps surprisingly, staples, paperclips and envelope windows are OK to leave in! But Kane County Recycles asks that you remove all large binder clips and plastic folders.

What can’t you shred? Please do not bring periodicals or other paper that does not need to be shredded and can go in your household recycling bin.

All paper collected will be shredded on site and then taken for recycling. More guidelines can be found at this page of the Kane County Recycles website.

The county is working with Accurate Document Destruction for this excellent service, which is provided for free to residents of Kane County. The cost of this program is covered by Grand Victoria Riverboat funds.
