A Batavia townhouse was destroyed and two others damaged in a first-level box alarm fire at around 8:15 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 11, 2017) in the 400 block of Mill Street.

According to a news release from the city of Batavia, firefighters arrived to find a townhouse in a row of five units heavily engulfed in fire.  Crews made an exterior approach and moved inside to extinguish the fire in three units.

No injuries were sustained by any civilians or fire service personnel.

Two townhouse units were left uninhabitable and a third was damaged. The fire was principally contained to only those units because a masonry fire wall separated the units, fire officials said.

“Fire investigators have determined that this prevention requirement prevented significant reach of the damage beyond that which was sustained,” the news release said.

The fire required response from nine engines, three trucks, one squad car, two ambulances, eight chief officers and approximately 50 firefighters on scene. Also on scence were the Emergency Services and Disaster Agency, Batavia Electric Department, Batavia Building Department, area Red Cross and Nicor personnel collaborating on safety and containment procedures.
