4 Kane County Communities on Top 50 ‘Safest Cities’ List

A new ranking from the National Council for Home Safety and Security shows that four Kane County Communities have made the list of top 50 safest cities in Illinois.

Campton Hill leads the list, at the No. 3 spot in the state, while Lake in the Hills, Huntley and Geneva earned spots among the top 50. Lake in Hills was ranked 11th, Huntley 25th and Geneva 31st.

The No. 1 safest community in Illinois is Western Springs, population 13,446, which recorded zero violent crimes and 35 property crimes in 2017.

Chicago, incidentally, was ranked 195th out of 206 Illinois cities, with a rate of more than 11 violent crimes and nearly 32 property crimes per 1,000 people.

Statewide, lllinois’ violent crimes per 1,000 places it at No. 35 in the U.S., while its property crimes per 1,000 is enough to push it into the top 20 lowest in that category.

The five least-safe towns on the list were Springfield, Rockford, East St. Louis, Mount Vernon, Lansing and Danville.

To identify the safest cities in Illinois, the NCHSS reviewed the most recent FBI Uniform Crime Report statistics along with its own population data and internal research. It eliminated any cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI and removed cities with populations under 10,000.

The remaining cities were ranked based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft) per 1,000 people. These variables were then weighted, with violent crimes accounting for 1.5 of the total (due to their severity) than property crimes.
