KDOT: Weight Loads Reduced on Silver Glen Road Over Otter Creek Bridge
Due to the current condition of the Silver Glen Road bridge over Otter Creek, the Kane County Division of Transportation is immediately requiring reduced loads for various vehicles using the bridge.
KDOT is posting the following reduced loads:
- Single Unit Vehicle — 19 Tons
- Vehicle With Three or Four Axles — 26 Tons
- Vehicle With Five or More Axles — 26 Tons
The reduced-load requirement will be in place until the spring of this year, when the county will make repairs. Completion of the bridge repair project is targeted for the end of April 2018.
After the repair project, KDOT has plans to replace the bridge. The bridge replacement project is under design and construction is planned for 2019.
Any questions and concerns may be directed to Mike Zakosek at 630-584-1170.
Silver Glen Over Otter Creek Project Overview
SOURCE: KDOT website
Silver Glen Road over Otter Creek (approximately 0.75 miles west of Randall Road) in South Elgin, Illinois is undergoing Phase I/II Engineering Design and Environmental Studies for structural improvements to the existing bridge crossing (SN 045-3161). Additionally, the River Bend Trail runs along the north side of Silver Glen Road and crosses Otter Creek within the proposed improvement area.
Proposed improvements will include total replacement of both the roadway bridge and pedestrian bridge, reconstruction of the approach roadway, guardrail improvements and drainage ditch grading.
Silver Glen Road and the Otter Creek Bridge are under the jurisdiction of Kane County Division of Transportation. The existing bridge was constructed in 1984 and has a sufficiency rating of 28.5, due to advanced deterioration of the precast deck beams.
Proposed right-of-way is not anticipated with the project.
During construction, alternating two-way traffic along Silver Glen Road will be maintained with a temporary traffic signal. Pedestrian access will also be maintained during construction.
Maintenance work to repair several precast deck beams was performed in 2017 and more repairs will be performed in early 2018 to ensure the structure can adequately maintain traffic loads until the full structure replacement can be implemented in 2019.
Work Zone Safety Alert
Drivers in this project area should be prepared to reduce their speed, exercise caution, watch for construction workers and construction vehicles entering or leaving the site, and obey flaggers and other traffic control devices within the work zone.
Drivers should expect delays and may want to add additional time to their commutes and consider the use of alternate routes while this work is completed.
KDOT reminds drivers that is illegal to talk on a cell phone or text while driving through a highway construction work zone. The minimum penalty for speeding in a work zone is $375.
