Members of the St. Charles, Aurora and Geneva police departments, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office many other teams from Kane County have pledged to “be bold and get cold” by participating in the 18th annual Polar Plunge at 1 p.m. March 4 at Loon Lake in Yorkville. The event will be the first part of the 2018 Law Enforcement Torch Run campaign to benefit Special Olympics Illinois.

Algonquin Already Plunged

Polar Plunge events have been taking place at venues throughout the area, and the Algonquin Police Department already has participated in this year’s Polar Plunge to benefit Special Olympics Illinois, according to Ten Two News.

The APD team was represented by 19 plungers, and approximately 30 family members who came out to support them. The team raised more than $6,000 and received a “Golden Plunger” award for raising the most funds as a Law Enforcement team.

Take the Plunge

The Polar Plunge, presented by the Law Enforcement Torch Run and GEICO, is a unique opportunity to support Special Olympics athletes by taking a flying leap — a leap into the frigid waters of Loon Lake. Participants must raise $100 in donations from friends, family and co-workers in exchange for jumping into the icy waters.

The plunge will take place Sunday, March 4, at Loon Lake, located at 13608 Fox Road, Yorkville. Registration takes place at 11 a.m. with the plunge at 1 p.m. The post-plunge party will immediately follow the plunge.

St. Charles’ Polar Plunge

Last year, St. Charles Police helped raise more than $10,000 for the campaign.

The St. Charles police and fire team has a fundraising goal of $3,000 for the 2018 Polar Plunge, and is currently accepting donations. Donations help offset the cost of participation, uniforms, and health screenings for Special Olympics athletes.

The team will be led by Police Officer Jennifer Larsen, who will be participating in her fourth polar plunge. Larsen will be joined by Officer Scott Coryell in addition to Stephen Siwy, Andrew Kidd, Phil Kuhn, and Samantha Sebeck from the Fire Department, along with their families and friends.

“Last year, we had an amazing outpouring of support from the community in support of Illinois Special Olympics athletes,” said Larsen. “We’re so excited to participate in the Law Enforcement Torch Run again and can’t wait to build upon last year’s successes.”
