We could see as much as 10 more inches of snow by Friday.

The National Weather Service has turned its Winter Storm Watch into a Winter Storm Warning — in effect from 6 p.m. today (Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018) through Friday evening (Feb. 9, 2018).

• What: Heavy snow possible. Plan on difficult travel conditions, including during the morning commute on Friday. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches are possible.
• Where: Portions of northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana.
• When: From Thursday evening through Friday evening.
• Precautionary Actions: A Winter Storm Watch means there is potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel. Continue to monitor the latest forecasts.

“A band of snow is expected to spread into parts of eastern Iowa and northwestern Illinois Thursday afternoon and evening with periods of snow continuing through Friday,” the Weather Service says. “However, confidence on exact snowfall amounts is low. Due to the uncertainty, a Winter Storm Watch has been issued. Replacement of the Winter Storm Watch with a either a Winter Weather Advisory or Winter Storm Warning is likely with later forecast updates.”

Wednesday’s 24-Hour Snow Totals

It looks like Kane County got another 1 to 2 inches of snow in the 24 hours prior to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 7).

Preliminary numbers show Algonquin with 2 inches as of 5:45 a.m. Wednesday. Elburn also recorded 2 inches, and Batavia 1.5 inches of white stuff.

The totals are on top of the 2.2 to 3.5 inches of snow recorded in Kane County communities in the prior 24 hours.
