UPDATE: Amtrak Train Carrying Local GOP Congressmen Hits Garbage Truck In West Virginia
A train carrying Republican members of Congress headed for a legislative retreat — including Illinois 14th District U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren — hit a garbage truck Wednesday (Jan. 31, 2018) morning in West Virginia, killing one passenger in the truck and injuring the driver and another passenger, according to reports from multiple news sources.
Sources say three Illinois congressmen were aboard the train, including Hultgren (R-Plano), Rep. Peter Roskam of Wheaton and Rep. Mike Bost of downstate Carbondale. House Speaker Paul Ryan was among the dozens of politicians on the train, according to CNN and other reports.
The crash took place at around 10:20 a.m. CST in Crozet, VA, media sources said.
Spouses of the GOP legislators were also on the train. Neither the lawmarkers nor their family members were seriously injured, according to reports.
Many were sitting reading or casually milling about the train at the time of the crash, the New York Post reported.
A spokesperson in Hultren’s office said: “Randy was on the train and is not injured. His family is back in Illinois. He asks for prayers for all involved, especially those on the truck and their families.”
The lawmakers were on their way for a retreat at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, WV, that was scheduled to start Wednesday and end Friday.
According to NBC news, authorities late Wednesday identified the deceased victim as Christopher Foley, 28, one of two passengers aboard the garbage truck. A second unidentified passenger was airlifted to University of Virginia Medical Center with critical injuries, the Abermarle County Police Department said in a statement.
The driver of the truck was transported by ground in serious condition.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash.
NTSB is launching a Go-Team to the scene of the Amtrak accident in VA. More information will be released as it becomes available.
