County Board member and Jobs Committee Co-Chair Brian Dahl announced Tuesday that he is resigning as representative of the county’s 6th District, effective April 7.

The move is bittersweet for the board member who first was appointed to the role in 2015, then won election in November 2016. The happy news is he will be getting married and moving into a home in Sugar Grove. The sad news is that he will no longer live in District 6 and so must give up his post.

“It has been a pleasure to with with my fellow board members, elected officials, county staff and employees of the county,” said Dahl, who is director of membership services for the Painters District Council No. 30 in Aurora. “I have enjoyed serving on many standing committees, particularly co-chairing the Jobs Committee.”

Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen will make the appointment to replace Dahl on the board for the two-year-plus balance of his term, with the approval of the full County Board. Typically, political party leaders make recommendations for the appointment. Dahl is a Democrat.

While county officials do run in primary elections under the banner of specific political parties, the majority of the work done in local government is non-partisan in nature. Dahl expessed his gratitude for his initial appointment in 2015 and for the confidence voters showed in his 2016 election.

“It is most gratifying to me to know that the positions I took on all issues that came before me were not based on partisan commitments or affiliations,” he said in his letter of resignation. “Rather, these positions were based on what I believed were in the best interest of those I represent, based on analysis of relevant issues and what I learned from my constituents.”

The Jobs Committee achievements over the past two years have been impressive. Dahl and Co-Chair Becky Gillam have led initiatives that include but are not limited to creating a highly-successful matching grant program to promote exports in Kane County, creation of the Why Kane website to promote economic development, recognizing successful Kane County businesses and supporting countywide jobs-creation efforts.

Gillam is not seeking re-election, so the committee will have all new leadership after the November election.

Dahl’s experience will be missed. He has a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Baltimore and a bachelor of arts degree from the National Labor College, George Meany Center for Labor Studies. He has 15 years of fiduciary experience, which includes all facets of government, including investment strategy, selection of providers for employee benefits, auditing and legal affairs, regulatory compliance and risk management.

His pubic service includes present and past stints on the board of directors of Fox Valley United Way, the Aurora Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Aurora Area Girls Softball league, where he also managed and coached.

He coached Aurora Boys Baseball in 1994, and boys and girls basketball at Annunciation BMV School. He serves as an usher, Eucharistic minister and and member of the Athletic Committee of Annunciation BMV church.
