Heads Up, Drivers! Lane Closures on Inbound Eisenhower Start Friday

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today (Tuesday, March 6, 2018) that lane and ramp closures will take place on the inbound Eisenhower Expressway (eastbound Interstate 290) and the ramp from the inbound Eisenhower to the outbound Kennedy Expressway (northbound Interstate 90/94) beginning Friday, March 9.

The closures are part of the ongoing Jane Byrne Interchange project. To complete the work, the following closures will take place:

  • Starting at 10 p.m. Friday, two lanes will be closed on the inbound Eisenhower Expressway between Racine Avenue and Halsted Street. One lane will reopen on Saturday morning, leaving one lane closed on the inbound Eisenhower until Sunday.
  • Starting at 10 p.m. Friday, the ramp from the inbound Eisenhower to the outbound Kennedy will be closed. A posted detour will direct traffic to take the outbound Dan Ryan Expressway (southbound Interstate 90/94), exit at Taylor Street and reenter the inbound Dan Ryan Expressway (northbound Interstate 90/94).

All lane and ramp closures will reopen by 7 a.m. Sunday, March 11.

The closures are necessary to construct pavement to shift the ramp that carries traffic from the inbound Eisenhower Expressway to the outbound Kennedy Expressway, as part of the Jane Byrne Interchange reconstruction project.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

Jane Byrne Interchange

The overall reconstruction project at the Jane Byrne Interchange will improve safety and traffic flow for the more than 400,000 motorists who use it each day, while also enhancing mobility for bicyclists, pedestrians and transit users in the surrounding neighborhoods.
