UPDATE: Elgin Police Make 2 Arrests After Shooting Threats To Larkin, Elgin High Schools
Elgin police have arrested two students for separate school-shooting threats aimed at Elgin High School and Larkin High School.
According to posts on the Elgin Police Department Facebook page, 16-year-old was arrested following a social-media threat of a shooting that was to occur today (Wednesday, March 7) at Elgin High School, and a 15-year-old was arrested in relation to a social-media threat claiming a shooting would take place Tuesday at Larkin High School.
Elgin Police Make Arrest After Shooting Threat at Larkin High School
Elgin police arrested a 15-year-old youth in relation to a social-media threat police were made aware Monday night of “regarding a shooting to occur at Larkin High School on Tuesday, March 6.”
Detectives investigated the case throughout the night and ultimately arrested a 15-year-old youth in connection with the threat. The subject is being detained at the Kane County Youth Home.
“It is important to note that the youth who made this threat did not have access to any guns,” Elgin Police Chief Jeffrey Swoboda said via Facebook.
“We are glad that the community provided the information to authorities and ask parents to remind their children the seriousness of these types of threats,” he said. “We will investigate and charge.”

The exact charges were not named in the Elgin Police Department Facebook post. Swaboda said the police Facebook page will be updated if further information becomes available.
The Elgin Larkin threat follows a series of Kane County area school threats on social media in recent days, including threats at Batavia and West Aurora high schools.
A 15-year-old in Aurora is facing felony charges related to the shooting threat against West Aurora. Events like these remind us of the ever torubling recent history our country has had with gun violence and school shootings. To talk about the laws that could be introduced to stop such acts remains futile given that gun control polarizes us American’s more than the British and their Marmite. Maybe a start would be to introduce devices that can aid gun detection. Whilst we may not all agree on gun laws, we can all certainly agree that the death of children is heinous, heartbreaking and epitomises melancholy.
Second Social Media Threat Results in Another Arrest
Elgin Police Department were made aware of a second social-media threat regarding during the evening of March 6, 2018. The threat said a shooting that was to occur at Elgin High School on Wednesday, March 7.
“While the investigation is continuing at this time, the 16-year-old youth responsible for the threat has been arrested and charges are pending,” Swoboda stated, “We appreciate those in the community who are reporting these threats. Kids really need to understand there are consequences for the disruption and fear they are causing.”
