Kane County Will Collect Nearly $1.3 Billion in Property Taxes This Year
- Editor’s Note: This is the second in a series of articles on Kane County Connects regarding the 2017 property tax bill payable in 2018. Tax bills will be available on the Kane County Treasurer’s Office website starting April 30 and sent out to Kane County residents by May 4, 2018. Subsequent articles will look at the top 10 Kane County taxpayers, an estimate of the average property tax bill by township, plus where the property tax money comes from and where it goes.
Kane County will collect almost $1.3 billion in property taxes this year.
That’s a staggering amount of money, of course, but perhaps the most relevant subhead is that most of that money goes to schools.
Yes, the Kane County Treasurer’s Office is responsible for tax collection, but taxpayers shouldn’t confuse that with the responsibility for the tax burden. A future article in this series will look at “where the money comes from” and “where the money goes,” but the gist of it is explained in the pie chart embedded here.
One small piece of good news in this year’s “relevant tax statistics” is that the “average bill” in Kane County went up by less than 1 percentage point, according to the above chart provided by the Kane County Treasurer’s Office.
In fact, it went up by .77 percent, which is lower than the previous year’s 1.01 percent and is the lowest year-over-year increase since the 2013 taxes we paid in 2014, when the total collection was actually lower than the previous year.
The “average bill for taxes” payable in 2018 is $6,694.08 — an increase of $51.12 from the average bill payable in 2017.
