A Chicago man has pleaded guilty for attempting to rob a 13-year-old girl as she walked home from school in northeastern St. Charles Township last December.

Javier Prado, 44, agreed Thursday (April 19, 2018) to a sentence of 10 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections in exchange for a guilty plea to attempted robbery, Class 3 felony.

Sixteenth Circuit Judge John A. Barsanti accepted the plea.

Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney William Engerman stated in court that the afternoon of Dec. 11, 2017, the victim, a 13-year-old girl, was walking home from school on Colley Drive in St. Charles Township when Prado approached her and asked if she had any money.

The victim tried to avoid Prado, who grabbed her, prompting the victim to bite Prado’s arm. Prado took the victim to the ground and searched her for money.

The victim was able to free herself, ran home and called police. When police arrived, they found Prado still in the area with a fresh bite mark on his arm.

According to Illinois law, Prado is eligible for day-for-day sentencing. He receives credit for 129 days served in the Kane County jail.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case.

“I’m proud of this strong and brave young woman. She demonstrated exceptional strength and bravery in the face of grave danger,” Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said.
