UPDATE March 20 Primary Results: Referendums — Aurora Voters Dissolve AEC; Nail-Biting Hampshire Fire Totals; Did Maple Park Squeak By?

  • 3PM WEDNESDAY, APRIL 4, NOTE: The results marked with an asterisk * have been updated to reflect canvassed totals from Kane County and corrected totals from DuPage.

Aurora voters on Tuesday chose to dissolve the city’s election commission.

The final tally was 6,476 “yes” and 5,060 “no” to the proposition. Election responsibilities for the Kane County portion of Aurora will be transferred to the Kane County Clerk’s Office.

While that might be the big headline news of Tuesday’s local referendum results, there were a number of other important decisions and close contests.

The closest was in Maple Park, where unofficial totals from Kane and DeKalb counties indicate a one-vote victory for a non-home-rule “retailors and services tax.”

Kane County voters rejected the proposition 58-50, but DeKalb voters supported it by a margin of 44-35. The result? The referendum appears to have passed 94-93. Keep in mind that these are unofficial totals prior to canvassing.

Also unbelievably close is the Hampshire Fire Protection District’s proposed tax increase for emergency and rescue crews and equipment purposes. Online totals initially indicated the referendum failed by three votes — 558 to 555. In fact, the DeKalb County election website shows 10 “no” votes and three “yes” votes.

But Kane County Supervisor of Elections Raymond C. Esquivel contacted Kane County Connects to say the actual numbers are 10 “yes” votes and three “no” votes.

If the totals hold up to canvassing, that means the Hampshire referendum will pass 562-552.
