24-Hour Rain Totals — Kane County Among Hardest Hit

The 24-hour rain totals from the National Weather Service indicate Kane County was among the areas hardest hit by Wednesday night and Thursday morning rains.

Elgin was No. 2 on the list of regional rainfall totals, with 2.79 inches recorded in a couple locations.

St. Charles got 2.27 inches, Batavia 2.06, Lily Lake 2.05, Gilberts 2.04 and Geneva 2.00.

The totals are for the 24-hour period prior to 10:30 a.m. today (Thursday, May 3, 2018), as measured by NWS Cooperative Observers and CoCoRaHS observers. Observations are usually taken between 6  a.m. and 8 a.m.

More rain is expected this afternoon and tonight, according to the NWS Chicago.

“Showers and thunderstorms are expected to move across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana late this afternoon into this evening, with the main timeframe of 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.,” the NWS said.

Some of these storms could be severe, with a risk of large hail and strong winds. There is also a low risk of an isolated tornado. Locally heavy rainfall can be expected with any thunderstorm.

“This could lead to ‘ponding’ or localized flooding, particularly for areas that received several rounds of heavy rain last night,” the report said.
