ECC To Host Summer Manufacturing Camp
Elgin Community College will be one of the sites chosen nationwide to host 2018 summer manufacturing camp to help students learn about and land jobs in the manufacturing industry.
Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs® (NBT), the foundation of the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, Intl.® (FMA), announced that 89 programs will receive 2018 summer manufacturing camp grants.
Elgin’s will take place from July 16 to July 19, 2018.
The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day and is available to students age 14 to 16. The fee is $149, according to the website.
Campers design and build a product experiencing the start to finish satisfaction of creating something they can show off with pride. Throughout the process, they learn how to do CAD design and operate various kinds of manufacturing machinery under the close supervision of expert manufacturing trainers.
They will also tour local manufacturing facilities learning what kinds of jobs exist, what skills and training are required, and how those businesses developed. They will have the opportunity to hear directly from local manufacturing company owners how they started their businesses, applying basic entrepreneurship principles to understand how a single product idea becomes a business.
NBT will award a total of $135,500 in funding grants, ranging from $1,000 to $2,500, to community colleges and technical high schools offering summer day camp experiences that introduce young people, ages 12 to 16, to careers in manufacturing and engineering.
NBT also provides each camp with curriculum guides, customized T-shirts, marketing help, and other materials. In addition, NBT will support 17 affiliate camps by providing the same camp materials but no funding.
Major sponsors of these camps are the CNA Foundation of Chicago, Mastercut Tool Corporation, and SolidWorks Corporation.
