Kane County roadwork is in full swing and projects are off and running in the month of May 2018.

Here’s a look at some of the work that’s taking place, as reported in the Kane County Transportation Committee meeting of Tuesday, May 15, 2018.

Longmeadow Parkway Tree Planting, Leveling

Crews have begun planting trees on Longmeadow and laying leveling binder on Randall Road as part of Longmeadow Parkway project.

Work on the permanent traffic signals at the intersections of Randall and Sleepy Hollow Roads will continue in the coming weeks.

Remaining work for 2018 consists of asphalt surface course paving on Randall Road, completion of the retaining wall at Sleepy Hollow Road, tree planting and project landscaping for section A-2/B-1 of the Longmeadow Parkway, Randall Road to White Chapel Road.

Longmeadow Parkway (Section B-2) White Chapel to East of IL Route 31

As part of Longmeadow Parkway (Section B-2) White Chapel to east of IL Route 31, crews have started stripping and grading the Raging Buffalo site and the areas adjacent to IL Route 31.

Crews will continue pouring the new concrete pavement of Longmeadow Parkway east of White Chapel as weather permits.

Work will then begin on the Forest Drive reconstruction and proposed earth work in that area.

Removal of the fallen trees and stump grinding along IL Route 31 will be addressed in the coming weeks. Mass grading and earthwork on the project will continue through the year. Anticipated completion is November 2019.

Eastern Section of Longmeadow Parkway

For the eastern section of the Longmeadow Parkway, from IL Route 25 to IL Route 62 and along IL Route 62 (Section D), utility relocation continues along IL Route 62 and is expected to be completed by the end of May.

Storm sewer work has started along IL 62 and will continue for the next few months. Other tasks will get started as weather and project conditions improve. Anticipated completion is June 2019.

What Else Is KDOT Working On?

The following is a status report of Kane County highway improvement projects that were recently awarded a construction contract or are still are in the design phase, and require right-of-way acquisition and/or additional funding before moving to construction.

• Longmeadow Parkway Bridge Corridor Section C from east of IL Route 31 to east of IL Route 25 and the new Fox River Bridge — Phase II engineering, toll bridge studies and ROW acquisition continue (five parcels remain). Portions of Section C will go to construction upon the completion of right-of-way (ROW) acquisition, design engineering and the toll bridge studies, as necessary.
• Bliss Road/Fabyan Parkway/Main Street Road — Phase I engineering is ongoing.
• Bunker Road Extension Keslinger Road to LaFox Road — Phase II engineering and ROW acquisition are ongoing.
• Dauberman Road Extension Granart Road to U.S. 30 — Phase I engineering is nearing completion.
• Fabyan Parkway at Kirk Road — Phase II engineering is nearing completion and ROW acquisition is ongoing.
• Kirk Road over UP RR, Metra and Tyler Creek — Phase I engineering is ongoing.
• Main Street Road over Blackberry Creek and at IL Route 47 — IDOT is the lead agency for the ongoing Phase II engineering and ROW acquisition.
• Randall Road at Weld Road/U.S. 20 — Phase II engineering & ROW acquisition are ongoing.
• Randall Road From Huntley Road to Big Timber Road Adaptive Signal Control — Phase II engineering is ongoing.
• Stearns Road Stage 5A at Randall Road/McDonald Road — Phase II engineering is ongoing.
• Various Engineering Projects — There are more 60 active projects in various stages of completion. Please contact the KDOT office if you have a question on the status of another project.

The intersection of Burlington Road and Illinois Route 47 in Campton Hills, Illinois was a four‐way stop between two two‐lane highways.

All‐way stop control eliminated a rash of severe crashes but was insufficient to handle growing traffic volumes. Initially, the Kane County Division of Transportation saw a traffic signal concept as the answer — but storage and taper requirements used pavement inefficiently and reintroduced safety concerns.

When expanding pavement, drainage and right‐of‐way requirements threatened to price the improvement out of budget, KDOT directed a consultant, Burns & McDonnell, to find another way.

KDOT and Burns & McDonnell brainstormed the idea of a roundabout. The case for it was so compelling that the Illinois Department of Transportation quickly approved the change to a roundabout — a first for an arterial highway in northeastern Illinois. The new roundabout required half the pavement of a signalized intersection and cost $1 million less than the final estimate for the traffic signal design.

STV’s proactive construction management and Martam’s skilled construction crews kept costs within 2 percent of the bid price. The expandable design improves capacity and traffic flow, accommodates large trucks and will help encourage more roundabouts in Illinois.

Work Zone Safety Alert

Drivers in this project area should be prepared to reduce their speed, exercise caution, watch for construction workers and construction vehicles entering or leaving the site, and obey flaggers and other traffic control devices within the work zone.

Drivers should expect delays and may want to add additional time to their commutes and consider the use of alternate routes while this work is completed.

Kane County reminds drivers that is illegal to talk on a cell phone or text while driving through a highway construction work zone. The minimum penalty for spe­eding in a work zone is $375.
