Ten people were injured, two critically, when an ambulance with lights flashing T-boned a minivan at 4:10 p.m. Wednesday (May 16, 2018) at Galena Boulevard and West Street in Aurora.

According to an Aurora Police Department Facebook post, an Aurora Fire Department ambulance with a patient in the vehicle and lights and sirens activated was heading west on Galena Boulevard when it struck a 2002 Chrysler Town and Country minivan driven by a 25-year-old Chicago man going south on West Street at the stop sign.

The driver “apparently did not see the stop sign at Galena Boulevard, and continued into the intersection,” APD spokesperson Dan Ferrelli said.

Ten people were transported to hospitals.

The minivan driver had to be extricated by firefighters. The minivan was occupied by seven other people, including three female passengers ages 3, 12, and 20, and four male passengers: twin 1-year-olds, and a 5- and 11-year-old.

All eight people were taken to Aurora hospitals. One of the twins and the 11-year-old boy were later flown to a suburban hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

The ambulance was being driven by a 36-year-old Aurora Fire Department paramedic who was treated at an Aurora hospital for minor injuries. His 28-year-old male counterpart was in the cabin of the ambulance rendering care to a 16-year-old female patient.

The patient apparently sustained no new injuries that were crash related and continued to be transported to the hospital in a different ambulance, police said. The paramedic treating her declined medical treatment.

The Aurora Police Department said via Facebook that everyone involved in this crash, except for the two children who were flown out to a suburban hospital, have all been released from hospitals. The conditions of the two children have been upgraded to stable.

There were no outward signs of alcohol or drug use at the scene.

The driver of the minivan was issued citations for failure to yield at an intersection and failure to secure a child in a child restraint seat. The APD Traffic Division continues to investigate the crash.
