A 109-car freight train derailed at around 2:30 p.m. Thursday, May 24, 2018, at River Street and Third Street in Aurora.

According to a city of Aurora email blast, there were no injuries, but local businesses — including workers and animals at from the Aurora Animal Care and Control office — were evacuated.

The BNSF Railway took command of the scene about an hour after the derailment. Because there were no hazardous materials, BNSF did not need to deploy its HAZMAT team, officials said.

The derailment caused several train rails to buckle, which may take days to repair. Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area during repair period.

The Aurora Fire Department cleared the scene within an hour of the derailment, according to the Aurora Police Department Facebook page. Residents were cleared to return to their homes, and animals evacuated from the Aurora Animal Care and Control are being returned to the facility.

Amtrak trains traveling to and from Chicago were affected, but no Metra trains were affected by the crash.
