The action voters approved by referendum on March 20 became official Wednesday (June 20, 2018) when 16^th Judicial Circuit Judge David Akemann entered an order closing the Aurora Election Commission.

The AEC’s closing was effective retroactively, on June 15, 2018.

The court action makes official that the election administration and voter registration functions previously belonging to the AEC are now transferred to the Kane, Kendall and Will County clerks.

Kane County Clerk John A. Cunningham said his office is ready, willing and able to take on the transition.

“Although the judge did not enter the order until today, we have been made preparations for this day,” he said via a Wednesday news release. “We developed and have executed a plan to assume the election and voter registration functions of the AEC, with the additional 63 precincts and more than 50,000 registered voters from the Kane County portion of Aurora.”

Cunningham said his office will be ready to administer the Nov. 6, 2018 General Election for Kane County’s residents of the city of Aurora.

In addition to assuming the election functions from the AEC, the Kane County Clerk’s Office will be opening a satellite office in Aurora that will provide the same services, such as birth/death/marriage/civil union records, passports, tax redemption, applications for marriage and civil union licenses, and voter registration, offered by the main office at the Government Center in Geneva.

The city of Aurora and the Kane County Board agreed to a lease which will locate the Clerk’s Office Aurora satellite in downtown Aurora.

Cunningham added his thanks for the hard work and dedication of his staff and the many elected officials who helped bring about a smooth and orderly transition.

“I would like to thank Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin and the City Council, County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen, members of the Kane County Board, Kane County IT Director Roger Fahnestock and his staff, Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon and ASA Joe Lulves, Kendall County Clerk Debbie Gillette, Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots, and Aurora Election Commission Executive Director Linda Fechner for their cooperation so that we could work together on behalf of the voters of the city of Aurora,” he said.
