The North Aurora Police Department said an “unknown medical event” might have contributed to the death of a 39-year-old man who was found in the Fox River over the Memorial Day weekend.

The death of Edward A. Poe of Aurora remains under investigation.

According to a North Aurora Police Department news release, officers were dispatched to the Fox River, near State Street, for a subject in the river. The caller did not provide a specific location or side of the river, so officers began checking both sides of the river.

Officers located the caller and the victim, later identified as Poe, face down in the river, about a quarter of a mile north of the North Aurora dam and about 25 yards off of the east bank of the river.

An officer entered the river, swam to the victim, and eventually pulled him to shore with the help of other officers and an Illinois State Police master sergeant.

The victim was unresponsive, and officers performed CPR until relieved by paramedics.

Officers learned that Poe was walking on the trail with the female caller, when Poe was believed to suffer an unknown medical event and then fall into the river.

North Aurora Fire Protection District paramedics transported Poe to Presence Mercy Center hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The incident remains under investigation by the North Aurora Police Department and the Kane County Coroner’s Office.  Anyone with information about this incident should call the Investigations Division at 630-897-8705, Ext. 610. According to a Coroner’s Office news release, an autopsy was performed on May 30, 2018, at the Kane County morgue, with the preliminary cause of death pending further studies.

Toxicology samples were collected and sent to a forensic lab.
