Kane County communities were all over the Preliminary Local Storm Report issued by the National Weather Service regarding the Tuesday (June 26, 2018) weather event that included a tornado touch-down in nearby Will County and a sighting in Maple Park here in Kane.

• Multiple rounds of storms passed over northern Illinois Tuesday afternoon and evening.
• Very heavy rain caused flooding across much of Northern Illinois along and north of I-88.
• Some areas received 2 to 4 inches of rainfall Tuesday.
• The NWS received reports of two brief tornadoes. The tornado in Kane County did not produce any damage.
• A storm survey will be conducted for the tornado near Manhattan, IL Wednesday

The following is a recap, in chronological order, of some of the NWS Chicago spotter reports.

At 3:14 p.m. in Pingree Grove:

“LARGE TREE BLOWN DOWN PARTIALLY BLOCKING ROUTE 47 APPROXIMATELY 1.5 MILES SOUTH OF ROUTE 20. OTHER SMALL TREE LIMBS BLOWN DOWN.”

At 4:14 p.m. in Hampshire:

“WATER OVER DITCH INTO EAST BOUND LANE OF TRAFFIC.”

At 5:27 p.m. in Hinckley:

“FUNNEL CLOUD CLOSE TO HALF WAY DOWN SIGHTED BY MULTIPLE SPOTTERS AND CHASERS FROM 527 TO 532-533 PM. LAW ENFORCEMENT AND CHASER/SPOTTER REPORTS CONFIRMED THERE WAS NO TOUCH DOWN.”

At 5:28 in Hampshire:

“MOST ROADS IN AREA ACTIVELY FLOODING DUE TO FARM FIELD RUNOFF. RELAYED VIA SPOTTER NETWORK.”

At 5:28 p.m. in Maple Park, a Tornado was sighted.

“VIDEO SHOWED A FEW VERY BRIEF SURFACE-BASED VORTICES THAT KICKED UP SOME WATER IN A FIELD SOUTHWEST OF THE PERRY ROAD AND MINER ROAD INTERSECTION. THESE ONLY LASTED A FEW  SECONDS AND PRODUCED NO DAMAGE. DELAYED REPORT. TIME  ESTIMATED FROM RADAR.”

At 6:22 p.m. in Pingree Grove:

“IMPASSABLE STANDING WATER ON ROUTE 47. RELAYED VIA SPOTTER NETWORK.”

At 6:36 p.m. a Hampshire spotter reported a flash flood.

“6 TO 7 INCHES OF FLOWING WATER ACROSS ROUTE 47 AT PLANK ROAD. RELAYED BY KANE COUNTY ARES.”

At 7:32 p.m. another location in Hampshire reported a flash flood .

“ENTIRE INTERSECTION OF IL ROUTE 72 AND STATE STREET WITH 12-15 INCHES OF WATER.”

In Manhattan, small parts of a roof were removed and several trees and electric wires were reported down and 6 to 10 inches of standing water was seen even before the tornado hit.

The tornado sighting was confirmed at around 6:53 p.m.

“41.39N 87.96W 06/26/2018 WILL IL TRAINED SPOTTER DELAYED REPORT. CONFIRMED TORNADO SIGHTING. APPROXIMATE LOCATION BASED OFF VIEWING PERSPECTIVE. NO KNOWN DAMAGE AS OF TUESDAY EVENING IN APPROXIMATE LOCATION OF TORNADO. TWO OTHER SPOTTERS IN THE AREA IN CONTACT WITH NWS CHICAGO ALSO REPORTED SEVERAL BRIEF TORNADO TOUCH DOWNS NEARBY.”
