2ND UPDATE: Areal Flood Warning Friday For Kane County
- 11AM FRIDAY, JUNE 22 UPDATE
The National Weather Service Chicago has put a Flood Warning in effect through 1 p.m. this afternoon (Friday, June 22, 2018) for portions of the northwest Chicago suburbs from northern DuPage to northwest Cook to northern Kane counties due to persistent moderate to heavy rain across the warning area.
This morning’s rains will cause widespread flooding to occur, especially in low lying areas.
“We’ve received several reports of street flooding, along with flooding at flood prone viaducts,” the Weather Service said. “Do not drive across flooded roads.”
An Areal Flood Warning is normally issued for flooding that develops more gradually, usually from prolonged and persistent moderate to heavy rainfall. This results in a gradual ponding or buildup of water in low-lying, flood prone areas, as well as small creeks and streams.

Localized Flooding
Some area communities have received 4.8 inches of rain so far.
“Do not drive onto flooded roadways,” the NWS said.
Moderate rain will continue north of I-80 through the morning, and with the saturated ground conditions will lead to localized flooding, especially in urban locations. The I-88 corridor in-particular has seen over an inch of rain in most locations this morning and is vulnerable to this localized flooding, the NWS said.

Showers Continue, But Drier Weekend
Showers will continue through the morning across the area. Some of this showers could be heavy and result in some isolated flooding.
Additional showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop across portions of east central Illinois and into portions of northwestern Indiana this afternoon. These storms will also be capable of producing very heavy rainfall and possible flash flooding.
The area should dry out for the weekend, with cool by pleasant weather forecast. Active weather with thunderstorms looks to return to the area by Tuesday of next week.
Algonquin, Montgomery Pass Flood Stage
The Fox River at the Algonquin Tailwater and at Montgomery are near flood stage, according to the NWS-C.
According to the NWS-C hydrograph, water levels at the Algonquin Tailwater are at 10.27 feet, with a present projection of reaching 11.1 feet by Saturday.
Minor Flood Level at that part of the river is 9.5 feet. Moderate Flood Level is 10.5 feet.
In Montgomery, the Fox River is at 13.61 feet. Minor Flood Stage is 13.0 feet. Moderate Flood Stage is 14.0 feet.

Kane County residents can help the National Weather Service and report flooding.
